City of Melton Business of the Year: Events 720

Events 720 are on top of the world and had plenty of reasons to smile, as they took out the Melton Business of the Year Award at the MBEA 2021 Gala Dinner at Tabcorp Park on Thursday night.

The company impressed judges with its ability to adapt and reinvent throughout the pandemic, displaying creativity by launching a new brand, The Wooden Toy Co. and adapting their events-focused operation to cater to a new demand for outdoor dining solutions.

Events 720 focused on making everything about The Wooden Toy Co. as sustainable as possible, with 90% of materials being FSC & PEFC certified, including the use of sustainably-grown and replanted Australian Hardwood for their blocks.

Business owner Leon Mortimer said their range of eco-friendly wooden toys, allowed children to engage in open-ended play and develop their creativity along their natural development trajectory.  He added that they already had partnered with 30 stockists since launching their brand.

When asked where the initial idea and creative direction for this pivot came from, Leon credited his wife Chloe and explained that they had been building toys for their own children for a while.  He confirmed their intention of continuing to build the brand even when the events sector opens back up.

Events 720 also put their manufacturing and design expertise to good use, supporting the hospitality industry with custom built outdoor dining solutions that have supported trading, and added sparks of colour in many of our local precincts.

Leon said that winning the Award for Adaptability and taking out the overall Business of the Year Award was “a huge honour and really came quite unexpected”.

“It’s a a huge validation for the whole team and all the hard work that we’ve put in,” he said.
