New $8.5 million centre ready to begin construction in Mt Atkinson

A new children’s and community centre has begun construction in Mt Atkinson and this week, City of Melton Deputy Mayor Cr Lara Carli and Member for Western Metropolitan Caesar Melhem marked the occasion at a sod turning event.

The $8.5 million Mt Atkinson Children’s & Community Centre will provide a space for three and four-year-old kindergarten, maternal and child health services, and community meetings and activities.

A partnership project with the Victorian Government, the centre is funded with a generous $2 million from the state’s Building Blocks Grants and $800,000 from the Growing Suburbs Fund, together with $5.7 million from Council.

City of Melton Mayor Cr Goran Kesic said the facility would be a welcome addition for the Mt Atkinson community.

“This centre will help meet the needs of the rapidly growing Mt Atkinson and Tarneit Plains community which is set to grow to more than 30,000 people,” Cr Kesic said.

“It will provide a welcoming place for children to attend kindergarten, for families to access maternal and child health services, and for community groups to gather.

“It’s a key part of a well-planned hub of activity with a future primary school and a recreation reserve planned nearby.

“I look forward to seeing the community enjoy and make the most of this important facility.”

Construction is scheduled to be complete by August 2022.
