Meet our Employers: Amazon

Venture Melton and Council’s Community Activation and Engagement team, recently held Council’s first Meet Our Employers event.

Anna Reid, Site Lead at Amazon’s latest fulfilment centre in Ravenhall, gave great insights into Amazon’s history, its virtuous flywheel model, processes, Amazon’s leadership principle and its processing capacity at the new Ravenhall fulfillment centre.

Anna also shared some examples of its strong workplace culture, what it takes to work at Amazon.

Endless career opportunities

With a facility that spans across 37,000 sqm and an operation that will soon shift to a 24-7 operation, Amazon has plenty of opportunities for new talent to join the organisation, which is classified as an essential workplace.

Anna Read explained that the centre processes approximately 6 million items annually, picked from 71.3k storage bins and that the company provides competitive pay to its pickers, who work 4 shifts of 10h per week.

In her presentation Anna summarised that Amazon are looking for people that are energetic, customer obsessed, have a can-do attitude, are team players, reliable and consistent.  A focus on safety, quality and production standards and being able to meet the physical requirements of the role were also important.

Phoebe Waipouri, a City of Melton local who works as Transportation Yard Specialist at Amazon, spoke very highly of Amazon as an organisation that provides opportunities and strong career prospects in an industry that is secure and growing rapidly.

During the following Q&A session Anna provided examples of career growth opportunities within Amazon and also answered questions on topics such as disability inclusion, OH&S and warehouse processes and what interview format to expect for different types of roles.
