State Government funds business case into TAFE campus for Melton
The push for a tertiary education option in the City of Melton has received a boost, with news that the State Government has commissioned a business case to look into a new TAFE campus for Melton.
Training and Skills Minister Gayle Tierney announced that work was already underway on the business case.
Funding to undertake the business case was included in the 2021/2022 state budget alongside a $492 million investment to build 13 new schools in Melbourne’s north and west.
The project is being led by the Member for Melton, Steve McGhie, who said business case will be undertaken in consultation with students, trainers, industry and community to determine demand for training, local skills needs, best case delivery, local partnerships and a possible site for a TAFE campus.
“I’m excited to lead this business case which will spark discussions with local jobseekers, trainers, industry and community about the need for a local TAFE campus,” he said.
Mr McGhie said he expects the business case to be completed by early 2022.
Expected to reach a population of more than 330,000 by 2026, Melton is one of Victoria’s fastest growing municipalities and one of the only fringe LGA’s without a dedicated TAFE or post-secondary education provider.
Almost 76 per cent of people who completed a TAFE course last year gained a job after completion, with others pursuing further study or remaining in existing jobs.
“TAFE and training is life-changing and we want all Victorians to have access to the very best opportunities no matter where they live,” Minister Tierney said.
“I’m looking forward to receiving the results of the business case so that we can make the best decision about skills and training for the community in Melbourne’s growing west”.
