International Day of People with Disability

Creating accessible and inclusive businesses builds stronger communities and that benefits everyone.

December 3 marks International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), a time to celebrate the achievements, contributions, and rights of people with disability.

For businesses, it’s a great reminder to check how inclusive and accessible your workplace and customer experience are.

Why Inclusion Matters

·         1 in 6 Australians live with disability.

·         People with disability and their families represent a $40 billion market in Australia.

·         Accessibility improvements benefit everyone, from ramps and clear signage to flexible work options.

How to Make Your Business More Accessible

·         Access: Keep entrances, pathways, and counters wheelchair friendly.

·         Communication: Use clear language, large print, and visuals.

·         Online: Ensure your website is accessible (screen-reader friendly, strong colour contrast, alt text).

·         Customer service: Ask, “How can I help?”,  don’t assume.

·         Events: Provide accessible parking, rest areas, and information.

Build an Inclusive Workplace

·         Inclusive hiring: Focus on skills and outcomes.

·         Awareness: Provide disability confidence training.

·         Strengths: People with disability bring creativity and problem-solving skills that benefit teams.

Get Involved

·         Celebrate IDPwD on December 3 – host a morning tea, share stories, or highlight accessibility wins.
