Environmental Health Update: Pest Control – why it matters

Pest control is not just good practice — it’s a legal requirement for all food businesses in Australia. Rats, mice, cockroaches, flies, and other pests carry harmful bacteria that can contaminate food, equipment, and preparation areas. Even a small pest problem can lead to serious food safety risks for customers.

What you need to know:

  • Pests spread disease and can cause foodborne illness.

  • Droppings, urine, hair, and nesting materials contaminate food and surfaces.

  • Signs of pests during a food safety inspection are taken very seriously.

  • If inspectors find live pests, evidence of infestation, or poor pest control measures — your business may be closed immediately until the problem is fixed.

How to protect your business:

  • Keep food areas clean and free from crumbs and spills.

  • Store food in sealed containers.

  • Seal gaps, holes, and entry points to stop pests getting in.

  • Maintain accurate pest monitoring records.

📌 For full details, see the FSANZ pest control guide.

Keeping your business pest-free is not only about compliance — it’s about protecting your customers.
