Census employment data update
Fuelled by high population growth and the release of new residential, commercial and industrial land, the economic landscape in the City of Melton is changing at a rapid pace with small, medium and large-scale developments underway and in the planning in all areas of our municipality.
Regular readers will be aware of some of the larger projects from articles.
In this article we zoom out to look at the bigger picture from a local jobs perspective and analyse the latest Census data on employment which has just been released.
For the correct interpretation of the following tables and to provide additional context on the presented data it is important to note that Census local worker's employment by industry data presents the number of persons working (full-time and part-time) in our municipality for each industry (1 and 3 Digit ANZSIC06 Industries) regardless of whether they live within, or outside of, the City of Melton.
In 2016 at the time of the previous Census the economy of our municipality was characterised by an emerging and quickly growing construction industry and a retail sector that contributed the highest amount of total jobs to our economy.
Since then the construction industry has continued to grow at a rapid pace, almost doubling the number of local jobs (+89%) whilst the retail sector has experienced steady growth (43%) sustained by our fast growing populations and the resulting increase in local spending power.
The construction sector and other industries that are closely correlated to residential development and high population growth are continuing to dominate our local jobs landscape by providing the highest share of total local jobs.

Whilst four out of the top five local industry sectors provide a higher share of jobs than the Victorian average it is worth noting that the Health Care and Social Assistance sector continues to be under-represented locally (2016 Census: Melton 10.4%, Victoria 12.5%).
Recent successful advocacy by Melton City Council which led to commitments from both major parties to the proposed Melton Hospital, and the planning of the Cobblebank activity centre as a major health and social assistance precinct, can be expected to accelerate employment opportunities in this sector over the next five to ten years and contribute to closing this gap.
Other key differences when comparing the employment mix of the City of Melton to the Victorian average were:
A smaller percentage of local workers employed in the field of Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (2.9% compared to 8.4%)
A larger percentage of local workers employed in the field of Construction (14.0% compared to 9.4%)
A smaller percentage of local workers employed in the field of Health Care and Social Assistance (9.5% compared to 14.1%)
A larger percentage of local workers employed in the field of Education and Training (13.3% compared to 8.8%)

Note: Census employment figures are known to undercount employment by varying amounts depending on the Census year. All Census counts are an undercount of total population, and in addition, some people don’t state their workforce status or industry. Also counts by place of work exclude those with no fixed workplace address. For this reason, it is recommended that for total job numbers, users look at the employment by industry (total) modelled estimates which are updated on an annual basis, and based on the ABS Labour Force survey, less prone to undercount. The Census counts by industry are included on economy.id for a greater level of industry detail (3-digit ANZSIC).
