Roads, rail push to get our City moving!

Melton City Council has launched its Federal Election campaign, Let’s Get the City of Melton Moving, to attract commitments from all major parties for roads and rail upgrades.

A comprehensive map in the campaign brochure outlines Melton City Council’s investment asks, seeking Federal Government support to deliver planned electrification of the Melton line, new train stations and an outer west roads package upgrading Hopkins Road and Melton Highway.

Council is calling for critical infrastructure investment that will :

  • Facilitate housing growth

  • Attract commercial investment to create jobs

  • Connect communities

  • Increase productivity

  • Improve safety.

The City of Melton is delivering on the Victorian State Government’s Housing Statement with a rapid growth in residential development. With an average of 5,500 new homes annually, the City of Melton is contributing 6.9 per cent to the Victorian Government’s housing statement per annum, while providing diversity and affordability in housing options.

Council is also seeing rapid development and commercial uptake of its employment precincts to create local jobs and unlock economic opportunity. Many national and international companies are seeing the advantage of locating in the City of Melton including Amazon, Nike, DHL and Electrolux.

Federal Budget and Election commitments to date

The commitment of $1 billion in the Federal Budget for upgrading the section or the Western Highway between Caroline Springs and Melton, leads recent good news for the City of Melton.

The Opposition has promised to match this investment in Western Highway funding as part of its Federal Election campaign. This means this project will proceed with bipartisan support.

The Federal and Victorian Governments have jointly committed to invest $300 million for a new diamond interchange at Calder Park Drive as part of the $1 billion Road Blitz. This should reduce congestion and provide better access for commuters using both Calder Freeway and Melton Highway to reach their workplaces.

Council is continuing to advocate for greater investment in both rail and road transport infrastructure to improve the region’s economic outlook and to help get the City of Melton’s residents and freight moving.

Other funding announced in the recent Federal Budget which will aid our City’s transport links includes:

  • $2 billion to upgrade Sunshine Station in Victoria, a crucial project to deliver Melbourne Airport its first rail link

  • Black Spot Program funding will fund a roundabout at Greigs Road and Mount Cottrell Road, and a turning lane at Exford and Mitchell Roads.
