Melton Town Centre – Have your say

Melton Town Centre (MTC) is changing. Help us shape its future.

The MTC has been impacted significantly by nearby retail competition, a lack of public transport connections, physical access limitations, changing consumer behaviour and a challenging economic climate.

The MTC needs positive, medium and long-term interventions to attract more visitors, revive its economy and make it a safe place for everyone to enjoy. With a proud history and an eye to the future, we want to breathe new life into the town centre.

To achieve this, we engaged experts to undertake technical reports in the areas of economics, community infrastructure, traffic and transport. Based on this research and your feedback, we have produced a Discussion Paper which outlines ideas and opportunities for revitalising the MTC and boosting the local economy.

Whether you are a resident, a visitor, a trader or a community member, we urge you to get involved and have your say on the Discussion Paper. Your feedback will help inform the development of the draft Revitalisation Plan, which will outline a series of recommendations for consideration.

Together we can make the MTC a vibrant and bustling civic heart once more.

Key opportunities from the Discussion Paper include:

  • Improve public spaces to encourage people to stay in the centre

  • Improve streetscapes and expand the existing tree canopy to enhance the natural setting, reduce the heat island effect and provide shade

  • Improve open spaces such as Fay Street Reserve

  • Increase the number of community services to accommodate the needs of a growing and diverse population. Community services can play an important role in driving ongoing visitation and activity in the MTC

  • Identify larger sites (owned privately or by Council) with development potential that could accommodate future residential, commercial and community services

  • Establish a clear point of difference and create a distinctive MTC brand, based on the themes of independent business, diverse communities and events, outdoor hospitality and natural outdoor settings.

We are seeking your comments on the Discussion Paper over the next six weeks from Wednesday 18 January to Wednesday 1 March 2023. Your feedback will help inform the development of the draft Revitalisation Plan, which will outline a series of recommendations for consideration.

The purpose of the Discussion Paper is to:

  • understand and communicate the existing context of the MTC and the need for the preparation of the Revitalisation Plan,

  • identify key issues and opportunities for the MTC and unpack key challenges arising from technical reports, and

  • outline emerging themes which will flow through into the Revitalisation Plan.
