Empowering Melton’s Future Workforce: Partnering Businesses with Local Schools
Empowering Melton’s Future Workforce: Partnering Businesses with Local Schools
Local businesses have the power to be truly transformational, not only for the community but for individual young people shaping their futures. In Melton, one of Victoria’s youngest and fastest-growing regions, this opportunity has never been more important.
Young people across Melton represent the future workforce: the next generation of tradespeople, healthcare workers, creatives, educators, IT professionals, and business leaders. By working together, schools and businesses can ensure students are equipped with the skills, experience, and confidence to transition successfully into meaningful careers right here in the local area.
Connecting Business and Education
Future Connect, the Local Learning and Employment Network supporting Brimbank and Melton under the Department of Education’s School-to-Work initiative, is dedicated to creating strong connections between schools and industry.
The goal is simple: to build clear and accessible pathways for local students into local employment, while supporting businesses in developing a skilled, future-ready workforce.
This is achieved through programs such as Structured Workplace Learning (SWL), VET placements, and Work Experience opportunities.
Structured Workplace Learning offers businesses a valuable opportunity to engage with students undertaking VET and VCE studies. Unlike traditional Year 10 work experience, SWL enables students to:
Participate in hands-on, industry-specific training
Attend regular placements over an extended period
Become part of a workplace team
Complete meaningful, competency-based tasks aligned with their studies
Why Host a Student?
Welcoming a student into your workplace provides a range of benefits:
Build a pipeline of skilled, work-ready future employees
Gain fresh perspectives and ideas from the next generation
Develop leadership and mentoring skills within your team
Strengthen your organisation’s connection to the local community
Bring enthusiasm, adaptability, and fresh digital skills that can support day-to-day operations and new ways of thinking
With Future Connect's support, the process is streamlined. Students are carefully matched to businesses, prepared for the workplace, and supported throughout their placement to ensure a positive experience for both employer and student.
An Opportunity for Local Businesses
Businesses across the Melton region are encouraged to get involved by hosting students for Work Experience, VET placements, or Structured Workplace Learning.
Even offering a single placement or connecting with another business can make a meaningful difference in a young person’s life and future career pathway.
Investing in young people is an investment in the future. By providing opportunities today, local businesses help build stronger communities, stronger organisations, and a more resilient workforce for tomorrow.
To learn more or get involved, businesses are encouraged to connect with Future Connect and help shape Melton’s future one opportunity at a time.
