Starboard Games - A Gamers Heaven Continues to Grow
Starboard Games started in 2016 as a way of making some extra money for Volkan and his wife Zeynep after moving to Australia as international students. They learned about websites like Gumtree and Ebay and started selling items that they found in local opportunity shops.
“It was totally random items at the beginning, a nice t-shirt, a pair of brand shoes or a nice leather jacket. Then we decided to focus on one type of item. The type of items we knew the best; gaming consoles and their accessories,” Volkan says.
“At first we were operating from our own garage since we didn’t have enough money to lease a shop.
“During Covid-19, our business grew. Whilst more and more people where stuck at home in quarantine they looked to gaming to relieve their boredom. People started buying more and more consoles, games, and gaming accessories.
“Unlike many businesses that suffered during this time we managed to save enough money to open up our business and we started looking at possibilities for our own shop location.”
February 2022 saw the opening of their new retail presence in Melton Town Centre. Fast forward 12 months and February 2023 saw a further expansion.
Not only has the retail shop been a success, but online sales continued to grow to a point where they could no longer be managed through the retail store.
Starboard Games has now taken on a warehouse space to support the growth of the online element of the business.
This space will also allow the retail shop to grow in size, with plans to remove internal walls to increase storage and expand their offer. The additional space will also support the introduction of additional types of products including collectibles, gaming memorabilia and rare vintage gaming kiosks.
With a team of six working under Volkan and Zeynep, Starboard Games is poised to grow even more. The couple hope to open a second shop in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
