Melton institution, Buddy’s Bakery is celebrating some big wins in the Australia’s Best Pie and Pastie Competition.

Taking out First Place for their Chunky Plain Beef Pie and Vegetarian Pastie, Buddy’s Bakery also received a number of Silver and Bronze Awards for their flavoured beef and poultry pies. A full list of the winning selections can be found at the Australia’s Best Pie website. 

A family-owned business, Buddy’s Bakery has been operating from the same location for 25 years, with owner Mey and her husband currently overseeing the operation.

Buddy’s is well known locally for tasty food, great quality and low prices, and Mey and the team strive to keep it this way for their loyal customers.

And loyal customers they are, with Facebook comments such as ‘my son now lives in Hoppers Crossing and still asks me to get him a pie from Buddy's,’ highlighting the strength of local support.

The loyalty extends to staff, with some of the team members having worked there for 10 and 20 years.

Mey says that her team, “always gives the best service, works well together and have lots of fun in the day”. 

The Covid lockdown challenged Buddy’s with quiet days and low customer numbers, but the lockdown also bought with it technological advances such the introduction of Eftpos facilities, online ordering and delivery.

Covid also made it difficult to source raw materials for the bakery, and Mey and the team faced some challenges in continuing to provide their trademark low prices and high quality products. 

But like so many local businesses, Buddy’s resilience meant this local institution lived to see another day.

And as recent awards would suggest, their dedication to quality at the right price is attracting attention further afield.
